Truth is I’ve always found it difficult bowling to Davey: Stuart Broad

Veteran England pacer Stuart Broad has opened up on his domination of senior Australian opener David Warner in Test matches. The Englishmen has dismissed the left-handed batter as many as 17 times in Test matches and has claimed his scalp more than once in the ongoing Ashes 2023 as well.

England are 1-2 down in the five-match series despite having won the Headingley Test by three wickets. Broad, though, is the highest wicket-taker in the series so far. In the three Tests, he has claimed 16 wickets at an impressive average of 24.94.

In his column for The Daily Mail, Broad shared his thoughts on how he has managed to get the better of Warner so often. He wrote, "The truth is I’ve always found it difficult bowling to Davey, and I still do. By going round the wicket I’ve tried to minimize the width he loves outside off stump but also bowl a fuller length and make him play at 80 to 85 per cent of deliveries.”

The right-arm pacer added that Warner used to stay on the back foot earlier and hit him through the cover region earlier, but credited Ottis Gibson for helping him find a way to trouble the Aussie southpaw. He added, "He used to sit back against me and hit me through the off side, and before the 2015 Ashes, our bowling coach Ottis Gibson pointed out that my average was much higher against left-handers.

"The Aussie team that season was full of lefties, and Ottis said I’d be out of the team if I didn’t find a way to bowl to them," the 37-year-old added.

Broad also revealed that he has worked on his bowling, particularly on being effective while bowling from round the wicket. He explained, "I spent four months practicing round the wicket. I wanted to bring the stumps into play, while still threatening the outside edge. By the time I got to Trent Bridge eight years ago, I bowled round the wicket all the time - and picked up eight for 15.”

Meanwhile, England and Australia will next meet in the fourth Test of Ashes 2023 at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 19 to 23. A win will see England square the series 2-2, while a loss would mean Australia will retain the urn. During the previous Ashes series in Australia, the hosts hammered the Englishmen 4-0.
